Which actor portrayed Desmond Hume in the television series Lost?

The story behind the answer

Henry Ian Cusick portrayed Desmond Hume in the television series Lost.

Desmond is introduced as the lone occupant of the Swan station, where he has been entering the mysterious numbers into a computer. His backstory gradually reveals his relationship with Penny Widmore, his years in the Royal Navy, and the events that brought him to the island.

Cusick’s performance became especially associated with the show’s time-bending mythology. Desmond’s consciousness repeatedly moves between periods in the episode “The Constant,” while his connection with Penny drives the acclaimed episode “The Cost of Living” and the season-three finale “Through the Looking Glass.”

Cusick was born in Peru and spent much of his early career working in British theatre and television. Viewers sometimes confuse Desmond’s actor with Dominic Monaghan, who played Charlie Pace, another major Lost character and Desmond’s close friend.
