Which actor plays the unnamed narrator in Fight Club?

The story behind the answer

Edward Norton plays the unnamed narrator in Fight Club.

The character is deliberately not given a conventional personal name in the film’s credits; Norton is listed simply as “Narrator.” He is an alienated automobile-recall worker whose insomnia and dissatisfaction lead him into support groups, an intense friendship with Tyler Durden, and the creation of an underground fight club.

The role depends heavily on Norton’s controlled, increasingly unreliable performance. The narrator initially appears to be the story’s observer and emotional center, while Brad Pitt plays Tyler as his charismatic opposite. As the film progresses, the boundary between the two characters becomes central to the plot and its psychological twist.

David Fincher’s 1999 film adapts Chuck Palahniuk’s 1996 novel. The screenplay was written by Jim Uhls, and Norton was cast after Fincher responded to his performance in The People vs. Larry Flynt. A common mix-up is to answer Brad Pitt because Tyler is the more visually prominent character, but Pitt plays Tyler Durden—not the narrator.
