Which actor plays Professor X in the original X-Men film trilogy?

The story behind the answer

Patrick Stewart plays Professor X in the original X-Men film trilogy.

Stewart portrays Charles Xavier, the telepathic founder and leader of the X-Men. Xavier operates a school for mutants and advocates peaceful cooperation between mutants and humans, placing him in ideological opposition to Magneto’s more militant approach.

Stewart appears as the character in X-Men, X2, and X-Men: The Last Stand. He also returned in later X-Men-related films, including X-Men: Days of Future Past and Logan. James McAvoy plays a younger version of Xavier in the prequel films X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix.

Ian McKellen plays Magneto in the original trilogy, making him Stewart’s principal on-screen counterpart. Stewart was already widely known for playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation before joining the X-Men series.
