Which actor plays Eliza Doolittle in the 1964 film My Fair Lady?

The story behind the answer

Audrey Hepburn plays Eliza Doolittle in the 1964 film My Fair Lady. The character is a poor Cockney flower seller whose accent attracts the attention of phonetics professor Henry Higgins, played by Rex Harrison.

The film adapts Lerner and Loewe's 1956 stage musical, which in turn grew from George Bernard Shaw's 1913 play Pygmalion. Higgins wagers that he can train Eliza to speak and behave well enough to pass as a duchess. Her transformation drives the musical's central conflict: whether changing someone's speech and manners truly changes their social identity.

A common mix-up involves Julie Andrews. Andrews originated Eliza on Broadway and won a Tony Award for the role, but Warner Bros. cast Hepburn in the movie because the studio wanted a major film star. Hepburn's singing was partly dubbed by Marni Nixon, while Andrews went on to win the Academy Award for Mary Poppins that same year. My Fair Lady won eight Oscars, including Best Picture.
