Which actor plays Bill Tench in Mindhunter?

Holt McCallany plays Bill Tench in Mindhunter. Tench is an FBI special agent who works with Holden Ford and psychologist Wendy Carr in the series’ Behavioral Science Unit.

Mindhunter premiered on Netflix in 2017 and is set during the late 1970s and early 1980s, when criminal profiling and the psychological study of serial murder were still developing within the FBI. Ford and Tench interview imprisoned serial killers to identify behavioral patterns that might help investigators understand ongoing cases.

The series draws heavily from real criminal-justice history. Holden Ford is loosely based on FBI agent John E. Douglas, while Bill Tench is based on pioneering FBI agent Robert K. Ressler. Wendy Carr is a fictionalized character influenced by forensic researcher Ann Wolbert Burgess, who collaborated with FBI investigators on research into violent offenders.

Viewers sometimes confuse McCallany with Cameron Britton, who gives the series’ memorable performance as convicted serial killer Edmund Kemper. Jonathan Groff plays Holden Ford, and Michael Cerveris appears as Ted Gunn. Mindhunter released two seasons, in 2017 and 2019, before a potential third season was put on indefinite hold.
