Which actor plays Assane Diop in Netflix's Lupin?

Omar Sy plays Assane Diop in Netflix's Lupin. Assane is a professional thief who models his elaborate schemes, disguises and escapes on Arsène Lupin, the gentleman thief created by French writer Maurice Leblanc.

The series is not a direct adaptation in which Sy plays Arsène Lupin himself. Instead, Assane is a newly created modern character: the son of a Senegalese immigrant whose father was falsely accused of stealing a valuable necklace. After his father's death, Assane grows up in France and later uses Lupin's adventures as a blueprint for seeking justice and revenge.

Created by George Kay and François Uzan, Lupin premiered on Netflix on January 8, 2021. It was designed around Sy's charisma and international profile, and the actor's performance helped make the French-language series a major global hit. A common mix-up is naming Vincent Cassel or Mathieu Kassovitz, both prominent French actors, but neither plays Assane. Mamadou Haidara portrays Assane as a teenager.
