Which actor played White House Communications Director Toby Ziegler?

The story behind the answer

Richard Schiff played White House Communications Director Toby Ziegler on The West Wing. Schiff portrayed Toby throughout the series, which originally ran from 1999 to 2006.

Toby is one of President Jed Bartlet’s senior advisers and is characterized by his dry humor, moral seriousness, and insistence on defending liberal principles. As communications director, he helps shape speeches, respond to crises, and manage the administration’s public message alongside deputy communications director Sam Seaborn and press secretary C. J. Cregg.

Schiff’s performance made Toby one of the show’s most recognizable figures. He won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2000, partly for the emotional first-season episode “In Excelsis Deo.” Schiff also directed the season-two episode “Talking Points,” making him one of the cast members who worked behind the camera as well.

Viewers sometimes confuse Toby with Bradley Whitford’s Josh Lyman or Rob Lowe’s Sam Seaborn, both prominent White House staffers. Toby’s defining role, however, is communications director and senior speech strategist.
