Which actor played Wade Wilson in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine?

The story behind the answer

Ryan Reynolds played Wade Wilson in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Wade Wilson appears early in the film as a fast-talking mercenary with extraordinary swordsmanship. The character is later transformed into Weapon XI, a version that differs substantially from the wisecracking Deadpool developed in the later standalone films.

Reynolds returned as Deadpool in the 2016 film Deadpool, which reworked the character’s cinematic portrayal and became a major success. The two films are connected to different approaches to the X-Men film continuity, so viewers often discuss the contrast between the portrayals.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine stars Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and explores Logan’s early history, including his relationship with Victor Creed. Liev Schreiber played Creed. The film was directed by Gavin Hood and released before the modern Deadpool series established its own tone and continuity.
