Philip Stone played Delbert Grady in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.
Grady appears to Jack Torrance in the Gold Room and identifies himself as the former caretaker who murdered his wife and daughters. He is a key supernatural figure because his conversation encourages Jack’s growing hostility toward Wendy and Danny.
The character is often confused with the Grady twins, who appear earlier in the film and warn Danny about the hotel. The twins are played by Lisa and Louise Burns, while Delbert Grady is played by Philip Stone. Jack Nicholson portrays Jack Torrance, and Shelley Duvall plays Wendy.
Kubrick changed several details from Stephen King’s novel, including the family’s names and aspects of the hotel’s history. In the film, Grady’s daughters are presented as ghostly twins, while the father is encountered separately in the Gold Room. Philip Stone had previously worked with Kubrick on Barry Lyndon, released four years earlier.
