Which actor played Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter films?

Robbie Coltrane played Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter films.

Coltrane portrayed Hogwarts’ half-giant gamekeeper and Care of Magical Creatures teacher throughout the film series. Hagrid is introduced as a loyal friend of Harry, Ron and Hermione, and Coltrane’s performance helped establish the character’s warmth, humour and imposing physical presence.

The production used several techniques to make Hagrid appear much larger than the other characters. Martin Bayfield, a former rugby player, played a larger-bodied stand-in for some wide shots, while perspective, oversized sets and visual effects also contributed to the illusion.

Coltrane appeared in all eight main Harry Potter films. He died in October 2022, aged 72. His performance remains closely associated with the cinematic version of Hagrid.
