Which actor played Richard Gilmore, Lorelai's father, on "Gilmore Girls"?

The story behind the answer

Edward Herrmann played Richard Gilmore, Lorelai's father, on "Gilmore Girls."

Richard is Emily Gilmore's husband, Lorelai's father, and Rory's maternal grandfather. A wealthy Hartford businessman and Yale alumnus, he represents the traditional world of privilege and achievement that Lorelai rejected when she left home as a teenager.

Richard's relationship with Lorelai is often more understated than Emily's, but it is no less complicated. He can be stern and judgmental, yet he also supports Rory's ambitions and shares a close bond with her. His Yale background becomes especially meaningful as Rory considers college and ultimately chooses Yale.

Herrmann was an experienced stage, film, and television actor before joining the series. He was also known for portraying Franklin D. Roosevelt and for narrating historical programs. He and Kelly Bishop, who played Emily, had both won Tony Awards in 1976. Herrmann died in 2014, and Richard's death became a major part of the 2016 revival, "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life."
