Which actor played Newt Scamander in the J.K. Rowling screenplay Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them?

The story behind the answer

Eddie Redmayne played Newt Scamander in J.K. Rowling’s screenplay Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The 2016 film is set in 1926, decades before Harry Potter’s time. Newt Scamander is a British magizoologist who arrives in New York with a case containing magical creatures. When several creatures escape, he becomes involved with a group of American witches and wizards.

Rowling wrote the screenplay, making it her screenwriting debut. The film was inspired by the fictional textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which appeared as a Hogwarts schoolbook in the Harry Potter novels.

Eddie Redmayne returned as Newt in two sequels. Jude Law played a younger Albus Dumbledore in later films, while Daniel Radcliffe played Harry Potter in the original film series, so the cast is sometimes confused.
