Which actor played music teacher Bob Johnson on Sesame Street?

Bob McGrath played music teacher Bob Johnson on Sesame Street. He joined the original cast when the series premiered in 1969 and remained one of its best-known human performers for decades.

Before Sesame Street, McGrath was a singer on Sing Along with Mitch, a popular NBC television program hosted by Mitch Miller. He also recorded folk songs and ballads in Japanese, becoming well known in Japan during the 1960s.

On Sesame Street, Bob taught music, sang with children and Muppets, and helped anchor the neighborhood's everyday world. He was sometimes confused with other original adults, including Gordon, Susan, Mr. Hooper and Luis, but those characters had different roles and performers. McGrath played Bob Johnson from 1969 through 2016, later returning for the show's 50th-anniversary celebration in 2019. He died in 2022 at age 90.
