Which actor played Mr. Yoshi, the martial arts master?

The story behind the answer

Pat Morita played Mr. Yoshi, the martial arts master, in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Mr. Yoshi appears in the season-five episode “Love Hurts,” in which Will seeks martial-arts training to improve his self-defense. The role is a small guest appearance, but it connects the sitcom to Morita’s best-known screen persona.

Morita was already famous for playing Mr. Miyagi, the wise karate teacher in The Karate Kid (1984), a performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. That connection makes him easy to remember in this episode, though his Fresh Prince character is Mr. Yoshi, not Mr. Miyagi.

Morita also had a substantial television career before and after The Karate Kid. He played Arnold Takahashi on Happy Days, starred in the short-lived Mr. T and Tina, and later appeared in Ohara and The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo. He died in 2005 at age 73.
