Which actor played Lolita in Stanley Kubrick’s 1962 film adaptation?

The story behind the answer

Sue Lyon played Dolores “Lolita” Haze in Stanley Kubrick’s 1962 film Lolita.

Lyon was 14 when she was cast, and the role made her internationally famous. The film adapts Vladimir Nabokov’s 1955 novel about Humbert Humbert, a literary scholar whose narration attempts to shape the audience’s view of his abusive obsession with Dolores.

James Mason played Humbert, Shelley Winters played Charlotte Haze, and Peter Sellers portrayed Clare Quilty. Nabokov wrote the screenplay, although Kubrick and producer James B. Harris revised it during production.

A common mix-up is confusing Sue Lyon with Dominique Swain, who played Lolita in Adrian Lyne’s 1997 adaptation. Kubrick’s film was released in 1962 and was made under strict censorship constraints, so it presents the story less explicitly than the novel.
