Which actor played Jack Donaghy's nemesis Devon Banks?

The story behind the answer

Will Arnett played Jack Donaghy’s nemesis Devon Banks on 30 Rock. Devon is a powerful NBC executive whose rivalry with Jack supplies one of the show’s recurring corporate battles.

Devon is introduced as NBC’s Vice President of West Coast News, Web Content and Theme Park Talent Relations. His surprise arrival makes Jack suspect that he is scheming to take over Jack’s East Coast television responsibilities. Their rivalry is driven by ambition, manipulation and an almost theatrical desire to outmaneuver each other.

The character was partly inspired by real television-industry executives. Tina Fey said Devon drew on Ben Silverman, who was co-chairman of NBC Entertainment when the series was being developed. Devon’s plots also involve his closeted sexuality, his engagement to Kathy Geiss for professional advantage, and his attempts to manipulate Kenneth Parcell.

Arnett’s role is recurring rather than part of the main ensemble. He appeared in nine episodes between 2007 and 2013 and received an Emmy nomination connected to the performance. Jason Sudeikis, another well-known comedy actor, played a different recurring character, Floyd DeBarber.
