Which actor played Gunther, the Central Perk manager, on Friends?

James Michael Tyler played Gunther, the Central Perk manager, on Friends.

Gunther first appeared as a background character and gradually became a recurring part of the series. His most prominent story involved his unrequited love for Rachel Green, who worked at Central Perk during the early seasons. Gunther’s deadpan reactions and distinctive bleached-blond hair made him memorable despite his limited dialogue.

Tyler’s first credited appearance was in the second season. He ultimately appeared in 150 episodes, more than any other recurring character on the show. Gunther’s job at Central Perk also gave him a natural connection to all six principal characters.

A frequent mix-up is identifying Gunther by the name of another recurring Friends actor, such as Paul Rudd, who played Mike Hannigan. James Michael Tyler remained associated with the role for the show’s entire original run and also appeared in the 2021 reunion special.
