Which actor played Deputy Communications Director Sam Seaborn?

The story behind the answer

Which actor played Deputy Communications Director Sam Seaborn? Rob Lowe played him.

Sam Seaborn is a gifted speechwriter and deputy White House Communications Director in the Bartlet administration. He works closely with Communications Director Toby Ziegler and is often responsible for turning policy into language the president can deliver to the public.

Lowe was initially viewed as the show’s lead. The pilot centers strongly on Sam, and creator Aaron Sorkin originally conceived the character as the main entry point into the White House. As Martin Sheen’s President Bartlet and the wider ensemble became more prominent, the series’ focus shifted away from Sam.

Lowe left the regular cast during the fourth season, but Sam’s story was not completely closed. The character returned briefly in the final season, becoming Deputy Chief of Staff to President-elect Matt Santos. The other listed actors played different staff members: Dulé Hill was Charlie Young, Richard Schiff was Toby Ziegler, and Bradley Whitford was Josh Lyman.
