Which actor played Carol, Liz Lemon's love interest?

The story behind the answer

Matt Damon played Carol, Liz Lemon's love interest, on 30 Rock. Carol is introduced as an airline pilot whom Liz meets around the time of a wedding, and the two begin a relationship.

Damon first appears as Carol in “I Do Do,” the season 4 finale, which originally aired in 2010. The character returns in “The Fabian Strategy,” the season 5 premiere. Carol is charming and romantic, but the relationship becomes difficult because both he and Liz have strong, complicated personalities.

The casting was a notable guest appearance for the series. Damon was already internationally known for films such as Good Will Hunting, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and the Bourne series, while 30 Rock used him in a deliberately comic television role.

Carol is sometimes confused with Liz's other romantic interests, including Floyd DeBarber, played by Jason Sudeikis, and Criss Chros, played by James Marsden. Damon’s character is specifically the pilot whose relationship with Liz forms a short story arc across seasons 4 and 5.
