Which actor played Assistant Director Walter Skinner?

Mitch Pileggi played FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner on The X-Files. Skinner supervises the X-Files office and becomes one of the series’ most important recurring allies and obstacles.

Pileggi first appeared as Skinner in “Tooms,” a first-season episode that aired on April 22, 1994. The role was initially intended to be recurring, but Skinner’s tense relationship with Fox Mulder and Dana Scully made him increasingly central to the story. By 2001, Pileggi had become a regular cast member.

Skinner is often caught between FBI bureaucracy, political pressure, and his growing respect for Mulder’s investigations. Although he initially seems skeptical and authoritarian, he repeatedly risks his position to protect the agents and pursue the truth. Pileggi also played Skinner in The X-Files film, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, and the later revival seasons.

Robert Patrick played John Doggett, Nicholas Lea played the conspirator Alex Krycek, and William B. Davis played the Cigarette Smoking Man. Those recurring actors are closely associated with the show, but none portrayed Walter Skinner.
