Which Academy Award did the song “If I Didn’t Have You” win for Monsters, Inc.?

“If I Didn’t Have You” won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for Monsters, Inc. The song was written by Randy Newman and performed in the film by Billy Crystal and John Goodman as Mike and Sulley.

The song appears as a musical expression of the friends’ bond and was recognized at the 74th Academy Awards. Its win was significant because it gave Pixar its first Oscar in the song category and marked another major awards success for the studio’s feature animation.

The award was for the song itself, not for the film’s score. Randy Newman wrote the music and lyrics, while the film’s broader musical score was also composed by Newman. Monsters, Inc. was not nominated for Best Animated Feature because that category did not yet exist at the 2002 ceremony.
