Which Abu Dhabi mosque is named after the UAE's founding president?

The story behind the answer

The Abu Dhabi mosque named after the UAE’s founding president is Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

The mosque is named for Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s first president and a founding figure of the federation. He launched the project to create a major place of worship that would reflect the cultural diversity of the Islamic world while combining traditional and modern architectural ideas.

Construction began in 1996 and the mosque was completed in 2007. It is Abu Dhabi’s largest mosque and can accommodate more than 40,000 worshippers. Its white marble surfaces, floral courtyard mosaics, four tall minarets and 82 domes make it one of the UAE’s most recognizable landmarks.

Sheikh Zayed died in 2004, before construction was complete, and was buried beside the mosque. Visitors often remember the building for its enormous hand-knotted carpet, gold-plated chandeliers and reflective pools. The name can cause confusion because smaller mosques bearing Sheikh Zayed’s name exist elsewhere, including a replica in Solo, Indonesia; this question specifically refers to the Abu Dhabi landmark.
