The ABC News podcast examining the rise and fall of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes is The Dropout.
The podcast is hosted by ABC News journalist Rebecca Jarvis and launched in 2019. Its first season investigates Holmes's ambitious claims for Theranos, the blood-testing company she founded, and the collapse of the business after scrutiny exposed serious problems with its technology and operations.
A second season, titled The Dropout: Elizabeth Holmes on Trial, followed the federal criminal case against Holmes. Jarvis attended the trial and used interviews with legal scholars, former associates, and people connected to Theranos to explain the evidence and courtroom developments. Holmes was convicted in 2022 on fraud-related charges and sentenced later that year.
The title is easy to confuse with Bad Blood, John Carreyrou's book about Theranos, or the television miniseries also called The Dropout. Swindled and The Dream are unrelated podcasts about fraud and consumer culture. ABC News's podcast is specifically the serialized investigation into Holmes, Theranos, and the resulting criminal proceedings.
