Which 8,000-metre mountain is the lowest of the fourteen main peaks?
Answer
Shishapangma
Answer
Shishapangma
Shishapangma is the lowest of the fourteen main 8,000-metre mountains.
Its summit reaches 8,027 metres (26,335 feet) in Tibet, China, making it the fourteenth-highest mountain on Earth by elevation above sea level. Despite being the lowest of the group, it remains an extreme high-altitude climb with severe weather, avalanche danger and limited access.
The mountain is also known as Gosainthan. “Shishapangma” is the Tibetan name commonly used internationally, while Gosainthan is associated with Sanskrit and Nepali usage. The summit lies entirely within Tibet, unlike some other 8,000-metre peaks that sit on international borders.
A Chinese expedition led by Xu Jing completed the first ascent in 1964. Shishapangma was the last of the fourteen main 8,000-metre peaks to be climbed, partly because Tibet was closed to foreign mountaineers for long periods.
