Tetris 99 is the 2019 Nintendo Switch game that turns Tetris into a 99-player battle royale. Developed by Arika and published by Nintendo, it has players compete simultaneously until only one player remains.
Each participant plays on an individual Tetris board, clearing lines and sending garbage rows to opponents. Players can target rivals manually or let the game select targets based on factors such as random choice, attackers, imminent defeat, or accumulated badges. A player is eliminated when blocks reach the top of the board.
Tetris 99 was announced and released digitally on February 13, 2019, as a free download for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. Its name refers to the match’s 99-player format, not to a special Tetris piece or scoring rule. It is distinct from Tetris DS, Tetris Ultimate, and Tetris Effect, which offer different modes and presentations rather than this large-scale battle-royale structure.
