The 2018 musical drama film starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper that won the Oscar for Best Original Song is A Star Is Born.
The award went to “Shallow,” performed in the film by Gaga and Cooper and written by Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wyatt. The song became the emotional centerpiece of the story, linking Ally’s rise as a singer with Jackson Maine’s struggle with addiction and his fading career.
Directed by Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born is the fourth major film version of the story, following earlier adaptations from 1937, 1954, and 1976. Cooper and Gaga recorded many performances live during filming, giving the concert scenes a more immediate feel. The soundtrack was released in October 2018 and became a major commercial success.
A common mix-up is La La Land, which also won an Oscar for Best Original Song, but its winning song was “City of Stars” at the 2017 ceremony. The Greatest Showman and Bohemian Rhapsody received music-related attention but did not win that particular Oscar.
