Which 2016 Sony headset brought virtual reality to the PlayStation 4?

The story behind the answer

The 2016 Sony headset that brought virtual reality to the PlayStation 4 was PlayStation VR.

Sony released PlayStation VR on October 13, 2016, for the PlayStation 4 console. Before launch, the project was known by the development codename Project Morpheus. The headset used the console for rendering and worked with PlayStation Camera tracking; some games also supported PlayStation Move controllers.

PlayStation VR gave console owners a more standardized route into VR than PC systems, because users already had a PlayStation 4 and could play specially designed titles. Its library included games made specifically for VR as well as experiences adapted to the headset.

PlayStation VR is distinct from PlayStation VR2, which launched in 2023 for PlayStation 5. The two systems use different hardware and connection arrangements. The original headset should also not be confused with Sony’s ordinary 3D displays, which did not provide the same head-tracked VR experience.
