The 2016 musical film starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone that won six Academy Awards was La La Land.
Written and directed by Damien Chazelle, the film follows Sebastian, a jazz pianist, and Mia, an aspiring actress, as they pursue their careers and relationship in Los Angeles. Its original songs and score were composed by Justin Hurwitz, with lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
La La Land received a record-tying 14 Oscar nominations at the 89th Academy Awards and won six: Best Director, Best Actress for Emma Stone, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Original Song for “City of Stars,” and Best Production Design.
The film is especially associated with a famous Oscars confusion. It was mistakenly announced as the Best Picture winner before the presenters corrected the error and Moonlight was declared the actual winner. Thus, La La Land won six Oscars, but not Best Picture. It also won all seven of its Golden Globe nominations.
