The 2016 drama about Chiron that won Best Picture after a ceremony envelope mix-up was Moonlight.
Barry Jenkins directed the film, which follows Chiron at three stages of his life in Miami as he confronts identity, family, masculinity, and love. It stars Trevante Rhodes, André Holland, Janelle Monáe, Mahershala Ali, and Naomie Harris. The screenplay was adapted from Tarell Alvin McCraney’s unpublished semi-autobiographical play, In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue.
At the 89th Academy Awards in 2017, presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were mistakenly handed the duplicate envelope for Best Actress, which named Emma Stone for La La Land. La La Land was announced before the error was corrected and Moonlight was identified as the actual winner.
Moonlight also won Oscars for Mahershala Ali’s supporting performance and Jenkins’s adapted screenplay. A common mix-up is to call La La Land the winner; it was the film mistakenly announced, not the official Best Picture recipient.
