Lemonade is Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album centered on Black womanhood, heritage, relationships, and resilience.
Released on April 23, 2016, Lemonade first appeared as an hour-long film on HBO alongside the album’s digital release. Its songs move through emotional chapters commonly described with titles such as intuition, denial, anger, apathy, hope, and redemption.
The project draws on R&B, rock, country, blues, soul, hip-hop, and spoken-word traditions. It also incorporates imagery and themes connected with African American history, the American South, and Beyoncé’s family background. Guest contributors included Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, and The Weeknd.
Lemonade received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2017 Grammy Awards. It is different from Beyoncé’s 2013 self-titled visual album, which used a surprise-release format but did not have Lemonade’s chapter-based film structure.
