Lemonade is Beyoncé’s 2016 album known for its visual film and themes of Black womanhood.
The project was released as both an audio album and a one-hour visual album broadcast on HBO. Its songs move through emotional stages including anger, apathy, emptiness, accountability, forgiveness, hope, and redemption.
Lemonade draws on blues, rock, country, soul, hip-hop, and spoken-word performance. It also incorporates imagery and ideas connected to Black Southern history, family, motherhood, and relationships. The visual presentation made the album feel like a unified work rather than a collection of separate music videos.
The album received widespread critical acclaim and earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. Beyoncé’s next studio album, Renaissance, arrived in 2022 and began a different three-act project.
