Which 2015 Chinese stock-market crash followed the Shanghai Composite’s peak in June?
Answer
2015–2016 Chinese stock-market turbulence
Answer
2015–2016 Chinese stock-market turbulence
The Chinese stock-market collapse beginning in 2015 is known as the 2015–2016 Chinese stock-market turbulence.
The Shanghai Composite Index rose sharply during the first half of 2015 and reached a peak on 12 June. It then fell steeply as leveraged retail speculation unwound and investors became concerned about valuations and economic growth. Chinese authorities responded with measures including trading restrictions, state-linked purchases, and investigations into market activity.
The turmoil included dramatic sessions in July and August 2015 and continued into early 2016. On 4 January 2016, newly introduced circuit breakers were triggered and then suspended after worsening the market’s instability. Currency concerns and a weaker renminbi added to international anxiety.
This episode is not the same as the Asian financial crisis of 1997, which began with pressure on Thailand’s baht. It also differs from a single-day crash: the Chinese event was a prolonged period of turbulence across 2015 and 2016.
