Which 2014 auction sale set a record for a work by Georgia O'Keeffe?

The story behind the answer

Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 set a record for a Georgia O'Keeffe work when it sold in 2014.

The 1932 painting depicts a large white jimson weed flower against a dark background. Sotheby’s sold it in New York in November 2014 for $44.4 million, including the buyer’s premium. That price made it the most expensive work by a female artist sold at auction at the time, as well as a record for O'Keeffe.

The painting had been donated to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum by the philanthropist and collector David W. Grainger. The museum later sold it to support its endowment and programs. Its sale attracted attention both because of the artist’s stature and because flower paintings are among O'Keeffe’s most recognizable subjects.

The work is sometimes referred to simply as Jimson Weed, but its full title includes White Flower No. 1. It is distinct from O'Keeffe’s other large flower paintings.
