The 2012 musical film adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel starring Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean is Les Misérables.
Directed by Tom Hooper, the film adapts the stage musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil, and Herbert Kretzmer, which itself is based on Hugo's 1862 novel. Jackman plays Valjean, a former prisoner pursued for decades by Russell Crowe's Javert.
The story is set in early-19th-century France and follows Valjean's attempt to rebuild his life while caring for Cosette, the daughter of the dying factory worker Fantine. Its historical backdrop includes the June Rebellion of 1832.
A notable production feature is that the actors recorded their singing live on set, using piano accompaniment through earpieces rather than lip-syncing to pre-recorded tracks. The film received eight Academy Award nominations and won three, including Best Supporting Actress for Anne Hathaway.
