Which 2009 organization promotes worldwide cooperation on renewable energy?

The story behind the answer

The International Renewable Energy Agency, or IRENA, was established in 2009 to promote renewable energy worldwide.

IRENA is an intergovernmental organization headquartered in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It supports countries with renewable-energy data, policy advice, technology analysis, financing guidance, and capacity-building programs. Its work covers solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal energy, bioenergy, and ocean energy.

The agency grew out of international efforts to give renewable energy a dedicated global institution. Its founding statute entered into force in 2010, after the organization was formally created at a meeting in Bonn, Germany. Membership has expanded to include countries from every region.

IRENA is sometimes confused with the International Energy Agency, which is a broader energy-policy organization founded in 1974. IRENA does not operate power stations or regulate national electricity markets. Instead, it provides analysis and cooperation intended to accelerate the adoption of renewable technologies and support the transition away from fossil fuels.
