Invictus is the 2009 film depicting Nelson Mandela using rugby to encourage reconciliation in South Africa.
Directed by Clint Eastwood, Invictus is based on John Carlin’s book Playing the Enemy. Morgan Freeman portrays Mandela, while Matt Damon plays Springbok captain François Pienaar. The story focuses on the 1995 Rugby World Cup, hosted by South Africa soon after the end of apartheid.
Mandela recognized that the national rugby team, once strongly associated with white South Africans, could become a shared symbol for the entire country. He supported the Springboks and met Pienaar before the tournament. South Africa ultimately won the final against New Zealand at Johannesburg’s Ellis Park Stadium.
The film’s title comes from the Latin word meaning “unconquered,” also associated with William Ernest Henley’s poem. Invictus is a dramatized historical film, so some scenes and conversations are shaped for cinema rather than presented as a complete documentary record.
