Which 2008 musical film did Beyoncé star in as singer Deena Jones?

Beyoncé starred as singer Deena Jones in the 2008 musical film Dreamgirls. The film, directed and written for the screen by Bill Condon, is adapted from the 1981 Broadway musical of the same name.

Deena Jones is a member of the fictional singing trio the Dreams. The story follows the group’s rise in the music business and explores ambition, commercial success, artistic control, and personal conflict. Jennifer Hudson played Effie White, Jamie Foxx played Curtis Taylor Jr., and Eddie Murphy played James “Thunder” Early.

Dreamgirls is inspired by aspects of the history of Motown and groups such as the Supremes, but its characters and plot are fictionalized. Beyoncé performed songs including “Listen,” which was written specifically for the film and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.
