Which 2008 musical film based on ABBA songs stars Meryl Streep?

The story behind the answer

The 2008 musical film based on ABBA songs starring Meryl Streep is Mamma Mia!.

Directed by Phyllida Lloyd, the movie adapts the 1999 stage musical created by producer Judy Craymer, writer Catherine Johnson, and composer-producers Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. Streep plays Donna Sheridan, a hotel owner on a Greek island whose daughter Sophie invites three possible fathers to her wedding.

The film uses ABBA songs such as “Dancing Queen,” “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!,” “The Winner Takes It All,” and “Take a Chance on Me” to advance the story and reveal relationships. It is therefore a jukebox musical, rather than a biographical film about ABBA.

Principal photography took place largely on Skopelos, Greece, although the fictional island setting is called Kalokairi. The film became a major commercial success, and its ensemble included Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters, Christine Baranski, and Amanda Seyfried.
