The 2004 film by Fatih Akin that won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival is Head-On.
Known by its German title Gegen die Wand, Head-On is a German-Turkish drama about Cahit, a self-destructive German-Turkish man, and Sibel, a young woman seeking freedom from her conservative family. Their marriage of convenience gradually develops into a turbulent relationship shaped by addiction, cultural identity, violence, and migration.
Fatih Akin wrote and directed the film, which became a major breakthrough in his career. Its Golden Bear came at the 54th Berlin International Film Festival, held in February 2004. The award recognized the film as the festival’s best entry in the main competition and helped establish Akin as a major European filmmaker.
