“I’m Lovin’ It” was the 2003 McDonald’s campaign that used “ba da ba ba ba” as its recurring musical signature.
The phrase became an audio logo as well as a spoken and printed slogan. Its compact rhythm made it easy to remember and easy to place at the end of commercials, functioning much like a sonic version of the Golden Arches. The hook was used across television, radio, online advertising, packaging, and promotional material.
The campaign’s international design was important to its success. McDonald’s could keep the same melody and overall identity while changing the language, products, and imagery for different markets. This helped the company present a more unified brand during the 2000s.
The jingle should not be confused with the campaign’s longer musical recordings or with earlier McDonald’s slogans. “You Deserve a Break Today” belonged to the early 1970s, while “I’m Lovin’ It” was introduced globally in 2003.
