The 2002 film directed by Sam Raimi that starred Tobey Maguire as a superhero was Spider-Man. Maguire plays Peter Parker, a shy New York teenager who develops superhuman abilities after being bitten by a genetically engineered spider.
Released by Sony Pictures, Spider-Man was based on the Marvel Comics character and became the first film in Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. Willem Dafoe played the villainous Green Goblin, while Kirsten Dunst portrayed Mary Jane Watson. The story follows Peter as he learns that his new powers bring responsibility as well as excitement.
The title is often confused with the later films Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, and The Amazing Spider-Man. Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 also starred Maguire, but they were released in 2004 and 2007. The Amazing Spider-Man, starring Andrew Garfield, began a separate film series in 2012.
