Stanley Kubrick’s 1999 film based on Arthur Schnitzler’s novella Traumnovelle is Eyes Wide Shut.
Schnitzler published Traumnovelle, translated as Dream Story, in 1926. The novella follows a married couple whose fantasies, jealousy, and encounters with secretive nighttime worlds challenge their assumptions about desire and fidelity.
Kubrick moved the story from early twentieth-century Vienna to contemporary New York. Tom Cruise plays Dr. Bill Harford and Nicole Kidman plays Alice Harford, a married couple whose conversation begins Bill’s nocturnal journey through the city.
The film was Kubrick’s final completed work. He showed a cut to Cruise and Kidman and studio executives shortly before his death in March 1999; Warner Bros. released the film later that year. The source novel is often confused with a screenplay written specifically for the film, but Schnitzler’s novella is the original literary source.
