The flooding became especially severe because Tropical Storm Dennis had already saturated the ground and swollen rivers less than two weeks earlier. Floyd then produced torrential rain, with more than 20 inches recorded in parts of the state. Nearly every river basin east of Raleigh reached levels associated with an exceptionally rare flood, and some rivers stayed above flood stage for weeks.
A common mix-up is assuming Floyd was still a Category 4 at landfall. It reached Category 4 strength over the Atlantic and Bahamas, but weakened before reaching North Carolina. The storm caused 51 deaths in the state, most associated with flooding, and its name was later retired from the Atlantic naming list.
