Titanic became the first film to gross more than $1 billion worldwide.
James Cameron wrote and directed the 1997 romantic disaster film, which combines fictional passengers with the real sinking of RMS Titanic in April 1912. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet play Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater, the fictional central couple.
The film crossed the billion-dollar mark during its original theatrical run and became the highest-grossing film of its era. It later surpassed $2 billion after re-releases and was eventually overtaken by Cameron's Avatar in 2010.
Titanic won eleven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Its box-office record is separate from its awards record: the film's commercial milestone concerns worldwide ticket revenue, while the Oscars recognize artistic and technical achievement.
