Which 1994 book by Nelson Mandela tells the story of his life and political struggle?

The story behind the answer

Long Walk to Freedom is Nelson Mandela’s 1994 autobiography about his life and political struggle.

The book follows Mandela from his childhood in the Thembu royal house through his education, legal career, involvement with the African National Congress, imprisonment, and emergence as a national leader. It was published in 1994, the same year that South Africa held its first multiracial democratic election.

Mandela wrote much of the manuscript secretly while imprisoned on Robben Island, and later worked with collaborators to complete it. The title presents freedom as a long collective journey rather than a single personal achievement.

Readers sometimes confuse the autobiography with Conversations with Myself, a later collection drawn from Mandela’s writings, speeches, letters, and interviews. Long Walk to Freedom is the principal first-person life story and the work most directly associated with his autobiography.
