Which 1990 album was A Tribe Called Quest’s debut studio release?

The story behind the answer

A Tribe Called Quest’s 1990 debut studio album was People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm.

The album introduced the Native Tongues group’s relaxed, imaginative approach to hip-hop. Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad built songs around warm samples, playful observations, and jazz-influenced rhythms. Key tracks included “Bonita Applebum,” “Can I Kick It?,” and “I Left My Wallet in El Segundo.”

Released by Jive Records, the album helped establish an alternative to the harder, more confrontational rap styles that dominated parts of the period. Its production became especially influential among listeners and artists interested in sample-based jazz rap.

The Low End Theory is the most common mix-up. That acclaimed album was A Tribe Called Quest’s second release, arriving in 1991. Midnight Marauders followed in 1993 and further developed the group’s celebrated jazz-oriented sound.
