Answer
3 Feet High and Rising
De La Soul introduced itself with the 1989 album 3 Feet High and Rising, which included “Me Myself and I.”
The album was released on March 3, 1989, by Tommy Boy Records. It was produced primarily by Prince Paul and featured playful skits, unconventional humor, colorful samples, and the contrasting voices of Posdnuos, Trugoy, and Maseo. The group came from Long Island, New York, and became associated with the Native Tongues collective.
“Me Myself and I” became the album’s best-known single and reached a wide audience. The record challenged narrow expectations about rap by presenting an eccentric, imaginative alternative to the harder-edged styles dominating parts of the late 1980s.
The title is sometimes confused with De La Soul Is Dead, the group’s second album from 1991. The debut’s title was inspired by a phrase used by the group and is a reference to the Sly and the Family Stone song “3-3-3.”
