Which 1986 Oliver Stone Vietnam War film won Best Picture?
Answer
Platoon
Answer
Platoon
The 1986 Oliver Stone Vietnam War film that won Best Picture is Platoon.
Written and directed by Stone, the film draws on his own experience as a U.S. infantryman in Vietnam. Charlie Sheen plays Chris Taylor, a young recruit caught between the opposing leadership styles of Sergeant Elias, played by Willem Dafoe, and Sergeant Barnes, played by Tom Berenger.
At the 59th Academy Awards, Platoon won four Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Sound, and Best Film Editing. Its victory is sometimes confused with The Deer Hunter, another acclaimed Vietnam War film, but that movie won Best Picture for 1978, not 1986. Born on the Fourth of July was also directed by Stone, but it was released in 1989 and did not win Best Picture.
Platoon was the first film in Stone’s Vietnam trilogy, followed by Born on the Fourth of July and Heaven & Earth. The Library of Congress added it to the National Film Registry in 2019.
