Which 1984 Wendy’s campaign made a skeptical customer’s question about hamburger size famous?

The story behind the answer

Wendy’s made “Where’s the beef?” famous through its 1984 advertising campaign comparing its hamburgers with competitors’ smaller patties.

The television commercials showed actress Clara Peller examining an unusually large hamburger bun containing only a small patty. Her repeated question became the campaign’s central line and quickly entered everyday speech. The advertisements were created by the agency Dancer Fitzgerald Sample.

The campaign helped Wendy’s increase attention and sales during a highly competitive period for American fast-food chains. The expression was soon used in politics, journalism, and ordinary conversation to ask whether something had enough substance.

A common misunderstanding is that Peller originated the phrase spontaneously. It was written for the commercial, although her delivery made it memorable. Wendy’s later ended its relationship with Peller after she appeared in an advertisement for another product, and the campaign’s popularity faded soon afterward.
