Which 1983 arcade game has Donkey Kong fighting an exterminator named Stanley?

The story behind the answer

The 1983 arcade game in which Donkey Kong battles an exterminator named Stanley is Donkey Kong 3.

Developed and published by Nintendo, Donkey Kong 3 was the third arcade entry in the series, following Donkey Kong Jr. Instead of Mario rescuing someone or climbing platforms, players control Stanley, who defends his greenhouse from Donkey Kong and swarms of insects.

Stanley sprays Donkey Kong with insecticide, forcing him upward, while also eliminating bees, beetles and other pests. The game is therefore a shoot-'em-up rather than a conventional platform game. That genre change is why it can be confused with the earlier Donkey Kong titles, especially Donkey Kong Jr., which also stars Donkey Kong as a playable character.

Donkey Kong 3 debuted in arcades in 1983 and later received versions for the Family Computer and Nintendo Entertainment System. Its unusual premise and Stanley’s starring role make it one of the more distinctive early games in the franchise.
